When I finally get into the product I start to type and nothing happens. Eventually it does but it is not immediate and not easy to use.

LibreOffice 5.2.1 is Fresh, so if not experienced user, one should stick to Still which is 5.1.5 now and 5.1.6 soon.
That problem sounds like a bug. Happens for example with some AMD graphics.Try it with the OpenGL rendering disabled: Tools → Options → View: Use OpenGL for all rendering (on restart)
Please write exact notebook model, graphics and graphics driver.
