How can I password protect a file that I have to update from time to time?

I have used password protection to protect a file that contains sensitive information. When I open the file it is read-only preventing me from updating it. I have tried “save as” using a different name and switching off password protection as I do so. This works, but when I open the newly renamed, unprotected file, it is still read-only.

‘Using Save As…’ and ‘Save with password’ gives 'Options (To hell with silly hiding!). One of these options is ‘Open file read only’. The setting must be chosen for your file. You need to switch it off.

Thank you. I now have two problems.

I cannot find the “read-only” option that you refer to: where is it?

When I was trying to do what I had hitherto been unable to do, I found that I COULD re-open and update a password protected file: it is no longer read-only on re-opening. I’m unaware of doing anything differently. Help!

With the Password dialog box open, click More options. The Open as Read-only will then pop up. I agree with Lupp: it’s silly to hide that option.
