Page numbering

Greetings, I am working in Libre 5.2.2 and I have tried everything I have read on page numbering. The problem is trying to put page 1 at chapter 1 which is 5 pages down. I can get a 1 there but the upper pages have numbers attached to them and if I delete one of those numbers, then all numbers disappear. I do see that 5.2.2 has moved around things in the tool bars. Is there anyone or anywhere where I can see how to replace a numbered page with another number or, how to make a template for a manuscript for a novel in Libre? or how to start format a manuscript from the beginning.
Thanks
Hawk

You should get informed about headers and footers and how text in them behaves. The best thing to do is to make a kind of sandbox document, where you can play with the options, so you get comfortable with page styles, headers/footers, numbering and the lot. Just reading about it won’t help you much, you have to get it all inside your head.

Here’s a tutorial on page numbering: [Tutorial] Page numbering (View topic) • Apache OpenOffice Community Forum - hope that helps. It covers a lot of the issues.

And this one, of course: [[Tutorial]] Page styles and headers/footers

It looks like your document consists of several “independent” parts, each with specific properties (page number sequence and style, title, …).

The basic tool for that is the page style. A page style defines a common appearance (margins, header/footer, page number kind, background, …) for a set of pages which are sequentially numbered. A change of these characteristics requires a transition to another page style.

Transition is performed with a break: either manual InsertManual Break..., or automatic with a configured paragraph style (Text Flow tab). In both cases, you can force the page number to restart at any value.

The principles are quite simple, but it requires practice to get quickly what you need. Follow @anon87010807’s advice: read the tutorial and make trials to see how the parameters interact.

Thanks for all the help but I have spent two days on page numbering and styles and I really have to get to work on other stuff. What is needed is for someone to make a slow, complete video on page numbering. Numbering that will start on a different page than the first page and once you start with the number 1, then how to rid the previous pages with their numbers. And, of course I would think Styles would fall into that.

In this particular case, what you need is:

a) a document with at least two page styles: one, say, Default, with no header/footer (or with no page numbers there) and another with a header/footer and page numbers there;

b) the first paragraph of the first page where you need numbering containing a break in text flow.
