It will not install because the old version (msi file) has been deleted
Assuming windows as you mention msi file. Try to uninstall the previous version from Control Panel, Programs & Features and then install the new version.
When i’m uninstalling the previous version the system says: missing libre-office_5.0.1_Win_x64.msi. It was an older download which I have deleted.
On the site of LibreOffice it’s impossible to download this version (it is an older one)

I was glad to see that i could download older versions, but …
the installation file asks for libreoffice_5.0.1_x64.msi and i cannot find that number in the catalogue.
I downloaded several versions 5.0.1. but they all have an extra digit. The new installation file refuses to accept any of them.

@willemr - how about renaming the downloaded 5.0.1 file to match what it is looking for? did you try that?
I did. Got the message: invalid version
So I 'm afraid my problem is not to solve.
Strange that a program mandates a former version to deinstall
I got this problem as well, Tried to Uninstall via control panel. did not work as that also requires the .msi which ahs been deleted (Network path not longer exists as hardware change.
Tried 3rd party unstaller as well (CCleaner). Not able to uninstall same as above.
Any other suggestions?
Edit 3 November 2016… Solved! I installed Wise uninstalled. Used " Modify → Uninstall". “Force uninstall” also works.
This install version 5. God a nice suprise, Previews of all version 4 Spreadsheets/word documents are still there.
