Modify numbering of the Headings - no numbering shown

Hello,

I am trying to modify the style the way shown on the first screenshot. Right mouse button click on the selected style in the Styles and Formatting Pane. When modifying the attributes like Font or Font Colour, Borders (…), on the dialog window shown on the second screenshot, everything works perfectly. All the changes are applied immediately on all headings document-wide. When modifying the Numbering for the Headings on the Numbering & Outline pane of the very same dialog, no changes are applied to the document. However, as I highlighted on the screenshot, the Outline Level is set correctly according to Heading level. I did quick check for all the displayed levels.

screenshot one

How can I activate the Numbering for all the Headings levels? Preferably not by clicking every single heading level in every document & activating the numbering & adjusting the numbering formatting & outlines for every single heading level.

Of course I did multiple attempts to change the settings & values on the corresponging dialogs to achieve desired result, no success though. Therefore I am posting the question now. I also checked the related chapters on help.libreoffice.org, googled, did not find the solution for the described above.

Many thanks in advance for the answer.

Hi

For modify numbering of the Headings: ToolsOutline NumberingNumbering tab choose in Number listbox for each level (or select level 1-10 if you want to set same for all levels).

In your screenshot, the selected item (Include this paragraph in line numbering) has no effet on outline numbering.

What you did is to set the mapping between a style and its level in the hierarchy. By default, Heading n styles are associated with level n (1 to 10) and do not need to be changed.

The second part if the task is to define the numbering properties if you need one (some documents are structured by Heading n styles but the section titles are not numbered).

Styling of the section number is done with ToolsOutline Numbering.... This dialog has two tabs:

  • Numbering where you define the properties of the number (type: arabic, alphabetic, …; character styles; inserted characters before/after; single/multi-level numbering, …)
  • Position where you can set the position of the number relative to the paragraph margin

Close this dialog once you’re satisfied with your settings which are shown in the preview.

Note:

The Include this paragraph in line numbering box in the paragraph style dialog shoukd be unchecked. It causes the line number within the page to be printed in the margin. This is usually not what you want, except for legal or patent documents where it serves as reference markers.

If this helps, please tick the check mark at left. Do not forget to close the question for community benefit if you think this is the correct answer and upvote it, karma permitting, if you deem it valuable.

Hi @ajlittoz

The Include this paragraph in line numbering is ticked by default (as for Default style for example). It is a default value and you have to enable line numbering with ToolsLine Numbering to print line number in the margin.

Thanks @PYS
Not using this feature, so don’t know all subtleties associated with it.
