How can I rotate text in a table in Draw?

Hi,

I am trying to make my text in a table cell vertical in Draw but so far I cannot do it. The only available option is under “Position and size…” but anything under “Rotation” tab there is grayed out. I was wondering, how am I going to change the rotation in a cell?

Version: 5.1.4.2
Build ID: 1:5.1.4-0ubuntu1
CPU Threads: 4; OS Version: Linux 4.4; UI Render: default;
Locale: de-AT (en_US.UTF-8)
OS: Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

Thanks in advance!

While text tables in Writer support a limited selection of text directions via the character properties, texts in Draw don’t.
If you urgently need something looking like a table and showing rotated text you will have to create rectangles, inscribe your texts on them, rotate, and group the shapes. Thorough sizing and justification are essential, of course.
Please tell us here if you find a better way.

(Edit 2:)
A much better forum on LibO recently died from lack of support by the TDF. Concerning the direction ‘Draw’ should develop you may want to look here.

Can you refer to/cite any doc?
Seriously?! Everyday I think that LO sucks more and more. Persisting bugs, and lack of simple features. But thanks a lot! I guess it is still better than having to use MS Office. Also when people complain that recent documents show all LO documents instead of specifically Writer documents in Writer, Calc documents in Calc, people defend in a way that LO is a suite! All one application. But tables are different between Draw and Writer?! It is a bit frustrating.

There isn’t any “complete” specification of any office suite/application. The most you can get is the OASIS documents specifying the persistent representation (“file formats”) and some functional aspects in specific for Clac where this is indispensable. Most of the mess we have is, however created over decades now by the bad practise MS imposed upon the field. I cannot see general remedy.

The most next-to-complete specification of an office-suite also containing features should be by MS (>7000 pages for OOXML and so). But this is not a gift to the community of the users but a sidestep under the allegation of closed standards and unclear specifications “subject to change without notice” by big administrations fearing for usability of documents in the long run. Otherwise it is just an invitation to all the competitors to surrender under MS rule.

I think even MS is having hard time by it’s own mess. (Compatibility issues between versions and OSs) But I was wondering how hard would it be to implement these features? Right after this I discovered that I can’t have color gradient backgrounds. These aside, I am having huge problems with LO constantly freezing. I spent hours to investigate it and found out that LO regularly tries to access files in recent documents list.

If any of these files was on a mounted share, which is not accessible anymore, LO simply freezes. First of all, it is unnecessary to check those files regularly. And even then it could have been done asynchronously with time outs. I suggested as a quick fix, to simply remove those checks a year ago. But things seem to progress slowly. But I understand that it is non-profit work. I will try to help as soon as I have the time. I am simply sad that we don’t have a proper alternative to MS.

@Genom: I am not Mr. LibO. In fact I am neither happy with the way the development goes nor with the way feature requests are treated nor with the way bugs are treated nor with …
The least happy I am with this askbot site definitely only supporting a breathless game of “This is my question and if you answer including a bit of backgroiund I won’t read.”
On the other hand I am in the comfortable situation to no longer substantially need office software much since I am retired.
Regards

(Appending:) During all my time as a kind of power-user of StarOffice (LibO’s relevant predecessor) I never had need of a table in Draw. And as I mostly was discontent with the MS-style abnormities of tables in Writer I did my thing with an OLE Calc table where needed to complete a text document. Worked perfectly that time. I wouldn’t need to buy/install two applications. Living charts included! (And even arbitrary angles for text what I rarely used.)

@Lupp: Thanks a lot that solves part of my problem. Now I need to find a way to make gradients. Sadly, I don’t know any alternative to it. So I will have to stick to it, until it is impossible anymore.

@Genom: “Now I need to find a way to make gradients” Are you sure? I actually cannot imagine a factual reason for such a need.
