Odd font display

I’m not sure how to describe the issue. The screenshot above from LO Writer (v5.1.6.2) shows a .docx document.
Some characters are highlighted in grey. They seem to have a small dash after them, causing the highlighting? I’m told this doesn’t appear in the word file.
It dosen’t seem to do it with all .docx files, just some from certain (unknown) sources.
If further details are needed, please ask.
Sorry if a .jpg doesn’t give the detail required.

That looks as if somebody has inserted what used to be called ‘soft hyphens’: a hyphen that will only show at the end of a line (press Ctrl± to get it). You can select such an oddity (press Shift and arrow keys to select text), copy and paste somewhere else to see that it’s indeed a hyphen.

I think you’re correct about the soft hyphen. Pasting it into Notepad does indeed show it as a hyphen.
Any idea why it appears in LO Writer though?
Opening the word file in Open Office doesn’t get it to show up.

Show hidden characters must be turned on in Word, just as in Writer, or you won’t see them.

I’ve just toggled that control on & off. in the word doc. It shows end of line stuff, paras, etc., then hides them. but it doesn’t affect the soft-hyphens.

Word - Tools - Options, see if hyphens are ticked there. I haven’t used Word for quite a while, I remember that there was quite a lot of things you can choose to show or hide, but I don’t remember the tab names.

OK, I don’t have Word, so I wouldn’t know about that.
Thanks for your help, at least I’m aware what is causing this issue, and it doesn’t seem too important, so I can ignore it for now.
