I am formatting a songbook for my church and would like to list an index or table of contents in the back of the book that shows the title of the song and its corresponding song number.
An example would be:
Come ye all you my people…56 << This is the songs own song number and not a page number.
Anybody have any expertise in this area? Help is appreciated. Thanks.
This is a suggestion:
Use style Heading 1 for the title of the songs. You can later modify the style to your taste (font, font size, spacing, …).
Make sure numbering is enabled: open Tools → Outline Numbering...; in Numbering tab, select how you number your titles from the Number drop-down menu. If you want some fancy decoration for the numbers, select an existing style from Character style menu. You can even insert a prefix and a suffix to the number with the Separator text boxes.
Create now your table of contents where you want it to be placed with Insert → Index and Tables → Index and Tables....
In the Index/Table tab, give it a name if default Table of Contents does not suit you, e.g. Song List.
The Entries tab is where to look to customise the entries. The Structure line defines how each entry is laid out. The grey rectangles with symbols like E#, E or T are placeholders for elements captured or generated by LO. Hover the cursor over them to pop a tooltip explaining in a human-readable way what they are. The white rectangles may contain fixed text which will be copied “as is” in that position (usually leave them empty).
Basically, your song entry contains the title (E), a tabulation (T) and the song number (E#). To get rid of what you do not need, click on a grey rectangle (it will look “depressed”) and type the Del key (not Backspace). To insert an item, put the cursor in a white rectangle and click on one of the buttons under the Structure line. The item is inserted at the right of the cursor.
Note: LS and LE insert hyperlinks to jump directly to the title. Since you will probably print your document, there is no need for them.
Once again, the item appearance may be set through Character Style drop-down menu if you want it to be shown differently from the standard Contents 1 style.
Click OK.
How to tune your ToC:
Insert → Index and Tables → Index and Tables... for tab positions in the ToC entry (click on a T placeholder, then set the position)Note also that one tab (the last one) in ToC can have a “magic” property: if you check align right, it will be positioned flush at right margin, whatever the size of the page and its margins. It will also “follow” this position when you experiment with your layout changing your margins. This is also how you don’t care for DIN Ax/US format and are confident with the intended position.
I assume you are familiar enough with styles to make the adjustments.

Just a note about tabs in a TOC: the tab settings in the TOC dialog box override the settings in the paragraph style, sadly, so any tab positions have to be set in the TOC dialog box.
