It would be convenient for me to be able to include captions on pictures that I use in an Impress presentation. However, neither the User Guide (version 3.5, chapter 4) nor the context menu give any indication that this is possible.
Do I have to just create a separate frame and put the caption there? Is there an easier way?
I am using OpenSUSE 12.2, LibreOffice 3.5:build-403.
Had the same issue in 4.0.2.2., didn’t see a bug filed yet, so I did it: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=63789

Per this question it looks like images in Writer can have captions, but I’m not sure about Impress.
Please consider filing an enhancement bug and providing as much information about this new feature as possible. Don’t forget to mark your bug as an ‘enhancement’. The QA team will be happy to help you triage your feature request in the bugtracker.
