Base forms: What does the "Open in design mode" toggle do?

Help is missing. Only info I could find was in Customize (shown below), but still I have no idea what this toggle is used for. I can edit my forms with this either on or off. It seems to make no difference in opening, or editing a form.

And this help does not clarify it for me.

And in this instructional video, it shows how you can use this to switch to data entry mode from design mode, but this doesn’t work for me.

And this page start to get at the usage, but it doesn’t work for me. It says, “The “Design Mode On/Off” button should save you from the hassle of endlessly saving a form (or other entity), reloading it in “run” mode, checking behavior, closing the form, re-opening it in design mode, making edits, re-saving, etc, etc. It usually works just fine, flipping you back and forth between design mode and “run” mode. Under Open Office version 2, I sometimes found that problems arose if I didn’t close the form, etc… but those problems seem to have Gone Away.>”

Design mode is nothing more than Edit mode in Base.

Sorry wrong track. It worked at one time but has had problems since v4.4.2 to my knowledge. Open a form in Edit mode. Now turn on toggle Open in edit Mode. Close form. Opening form normally will actually open it it edit mode.

This actually can be done through a macro:

ThisDatabaseDocument.FormDocuments.getbyname( "ChangeFormMenu" ).openDesign

Thanks R, Well ok, there is an icon to toggle back and forth from design mode, called “Toggle Design mode”, but that’s not the button or feature I’m asking about. That one works fine. It’s the one with the tool tip, labeled “Open in design mode” shown above that doesn’t seem to do anything.

I had already tried what you suggest, and tried it again to be sure, but it does not work. Perhaps it will start working. At least I know I’m not missing anything important. Thanks again.

Sorry. Didn’t you see the correction? I can’t see much value in it. I needed to use it once quite a while back which is why I forgot it didn’t work correctly. Then found the macro for what I needed. BTW - your above mentioned post to sheepdogguides is talking about OpenOffice v2.0 - really old!
