How to copy an heading style?

I need to copy exactly the Heading 2 style, named Heading 2 new. It simply add a page break before it.

It seems that this new style use a different numbering, it restart from 1.

I need that this new style share the numbering of Heading 2. How to do this?

When you want to keep almost all properties and attributes of a style derived from another one, select the “parent” style in the Styles and Formatting panel (display it with F11), then right-click and choose New... from the popup menu.

An new style is created but notice it is “linked” to the parent one (Heading 2 in your case). Give it a new name like Heading 2 new.

Alter the properties which should be different from the parent style.

In your case, got to Text Flow tab and check Insert (in Breaks part) Type Page Position Before (these two last are default).

Click OK. You’re done.

If numbering is restarted from 1, go to Outline & Numbering tab in style definition dialog and uncheck Restart at this paragraph box.

I have created heading 2 new the numbering is not copied from heading 2.
Heading 2 new has already unchecked Restart at this paragraph.

if I create 2 heading 2 and one heading 2 new I see this new line without numbering. If I try to apply the same numbering, I see that heading 2 has numbering style set to Outline Numbering and I cannot change it. This setting is not available for heading 2 new.

You’re right, I was a bit fast in my answer.

With New..., styles are not fully cloned. Some attributes must be manually set, such as Next style or Outline level (and I should have known because one of my templates contains such “semi-duplicated” outline style).

It looks like LO has a limitation in outline numbering: ToolsOutline numbering... allows to associate a single style to automatic numbering at that level. Paragraph style property outline level (to be continued

OpenOffice is just the same; the Outline numbering numbering style is only available for the paragraph style that has been set to that outline level in Tools - Outline Numbering, derived styles aren’t included.

… ensures that the paragraph is entered into the TOC but unfortunately does not add it to the to-be-numbered style list. Consequently, you must make an exclusive choice about the style to be numbered.

Since you cannot modify Heading x protected built-in styles, there are different hacks to achieve several heading style at the same level. See this question

… which will point you to suggestions.

A naive question: do you really need a Heading 2 new with just the page break flag added? It will give a heterogeneous look to your document: some level-2 with page break, others without.

I agree with @ajlittoz, if all you want is prevent that a heading ends at the bottom of a page, it’s better to turn on Keep with next paragraph on the Text Flow tab of the paragraph style dialog box.
