Why does autocorrect not work for abbreviations?

I’ve have autocorrect switched on to work as I type and it does for ordinary spellings, replacing them with the correct version, but for i’m for instance, it won’t apply the autocorrect option entered on the list (I’m). It does nothing, though the error shows up in spellcheck.

I don’t know why. Any idea what I need to do to make it apply everything entered on the autocorrect replace list?

Type i’m in a Writer document, copy it and paste it into the “Replace:” field in the autocorrect dialog. Click “New” and “OK”.
Type I’m in the Writer document, copy it, choose the i’m entry in the replace table of the autocorrect dialog, and paste into the “With:” field. Click “Replace” and “OK”.

It did not work because single quotes are replaced.

Thank you. I can’t say I really understand why that is so complicated, but it works, so thanks for the help.
