Calc protected cells ... not so protected - BUG?

*** EDIT: Can anyone please confirm? ***

In LO Version 5.3.1.2 I do this:

  1. I create a new Calc file

  2. The cursor is in cell A1

  3. I protect the tab:

    • I don’t enter a password
    • I deselect “Select protected cells”
    • I keep “Select unprotected cells” selected

Since all cells have a “Default” style, and the default style is set to “protected” it should now be impossible to select any cell at all.

Let’s test … I click TAB … nothing happens. So far so good.

I click ENTER … nothing happens. Nice work!

I click CURSOR RIGHT ARROW … cell B1 is selected … whaaaaat??! :-s

Using the arrow keys I can select many more cells … not all of them, but many!

I am able to click some cells with the mouse as well! This seems like a major bug.

Is this only happening to me, or to other people as well? Could someone please test and comfirm?

I wouldn’t call it “major bug”.

The problem you see only happens when you worked with non-protected sheet, and then protected it and try to continue working with it in the same session. After you save and reopen, the problem is not happening anymore. As the author of such protection is supposedly not the intended audience of such protected spreadsheets, there seem to be not that much problem.

However, why do you want to see confirmations? If you see something that is a bug, why not write it to Bugzilla? Because anyway, both here and there, someone will need to reproduce; and if you require it both here and there, isn’t that waste of human resources? This is clearly a bug (a minor one IMO). Just file a new issue for it, please.

Thanks for reply. I ask for confirmation because I want to know if this problem is related to my computer or not. I use a spreadsheet where only the input fields should be selectable. When I use tab everything works fine. But when I use cursor, the cursor leaves the working area where the input fields are.

Your solution with saving and reopening doesn’t work on my spreadsheet. Could I perhaps have changed a setting that causes this behavior? (I don’t know how to post bugs by the way).

TDF Bugzilla is accessible from main LibreOffice site going to Get HelpFeedback.

Works as expected on LO 4.4.1.2 but I get the same problem you quoted on LO 5.0.2.2. As @mikekaganski said I find that saving and reopening the file it then works as expected, but you have found that it doesn’t for you. It looks as this is related to your later version of LO.

I have found a further problem on both the versions I tried. You can go to a protected cell using the name box. This is not allowed in MS Excel.

Thanks for your reply. You are right! “You can go to a protected cell using the name box.” I just tested this and I can confirm it. This is really unwanted behavior.

Do you perhaps know how to make a bug report? I want to do this, but it needs my mail address and anyone who is logged in then can see my mail address. I don’t want my personal mail address to be visible to people I don’t know. Could you perhaps create a bug report? Please let me know if you are willing to.

@LibreGuy I think it is a bit much that you want me to reveal my email address when you are not prepared to reveal yours. It will only be seen by members anyway. This is not a problem for me so it is up to you to make a bug report if it is important to you.

I thought maybe you were already familiar with posting bugs. That’s why I asked. No problem. When I have time maybe I will file a bug report using a temporary mail address. Thanks for your help.
