First six pages of manuscript without page numbers

I have followed and read a huge number of links re this question and have now given in and have to bother someone here! I simply want to start the page numbering of my book on page 7 - making the 7th page, page 1.

So far I have set up my document (which is a book) with Alternating Page Styles, and put in my page numbers. Maybe I shouldn’t have done this first if I need the first 6 pages without numbers?

The links I’ve followed and tutorials I’ve tried re starting numbering after page 6 don’t seem to work on a document with alternating page styles.

Any help would be SO very much appreciated, I am completely stuck.

Many thanks

  1. Do you save to .odt?
  2. I do not understand your usage of the term “alternating page styles”.

But: You can neither change pages styles nor the numbering of pages throughout a document without inserting manual page breaks via ‘Insert’ > ‘Manual Break…’ selecting a new (or probably the old one again) page style and checking ‘Change page number’ if applicable. Inserting the page break in front of th body to start with page number 1 you have to choose a page style and to set 1 as the new page number.

You need two sets of PAGE STYLES. Right Hand-1 and Left Hand-1 with no page numbers in the header or footer. Then Right Hand-2 and Left-Hand-2 with page numbers starting with 7. Choose your own page style names.

The numbers will start with Right Hand odd page numbers. Insert the manual break as documented above.

Apologies! I thought replies to my question came through on my email - which I’ve now realise they don’t! I’ve only just checked back here and happy to say I eventually worked through my problem and got my page numbers in, as you said using page styles and manual breaks.

Many thanks for your reply.
