Is there any way to thin down these scalable brackets? Frankly they look absolutely ghastly, and they used to be fine in previous versions.

Can you attach one of the formulas? In my copy under Fedora Linux, the scalable parentheses are much thinner. I’d like to check with your equation. BTW, your LO version and OS?
There is an extension called TexMaths that allows to use Latex equations into LibreOffice. You can give it a try =).
