2016-11-18 00:35:46 +0200 commented answer calc changing 3007:1000 to 3023:40:00... why?

I don't think so, but there are ways to work around it: - Save them to a CSV and load them from there so you get the Text Import dialog, where you can deselect "Detect special numbers". - Paste it to a plain-text editor, add an extra row and paste all back. Pasting more than one row also makes LibO show the Text Import dialog.

2016-11-02 00:12:20 +0200 answered a question calc changing 3007:1000 to 3023:40:00... why?

Calc thinks it's a number in the form HH:MM and it's converting it to HH:MM:SS (1000 minutes equals 16 hours 40 minutes). The problem with this is that even if you clear the number format it will be changed to 125.9861111.

I didn't find a "paste as string" or anything similar so your best bet is this:

Prepend a single-quote mark (') to each value before pasting [*] to force Calc to interpret your values as strings.

2016-10-27 03:16:46 +0200 answered a question [Writer] Style that automatically bolds first sentence of a paragraph?

I tried but didn't find a way.

Usually, for glossaries the best way is to use the List Contents and List Heading styles but this way the "definition" gets in a different paragraph than the "term". You want something more similar to a dictionary instead.

Under HTML I would try making a paragraph float, but this would be unpredictable. Besides LibreOffice doesn't have such functionality anyway; you would need to create a frame for each "term" manually, so this is a no-go.

I tried using "Drop caps" for whole words which lets you apply an arbitrary style, but the interface forces you to use 2 or more lines. If it let you do a 1-line drop cap, you could get the desired effect, except that for words with non-breaking hyphens only the first side of the word gets dropped.

Still, even though this can't be done automatically I recommend creating a Character Style named "Inline term" or the like, setting it to Bold and using it to manually mark your terms, so you can clear your Direct Formattings using Ctrl+M to the whole document without hurting the bold for your terms.

@hattohoax: please don't expect us to read your mind. You are not specifying exactly how is it that it works under Word. When I used Word a while back the "quick shortcuts" I used were Alt+nnn and those were provided by Windows, not Office. If Word has some other way of providing this itself, please tell us explicitly what that mechanism is so we can map it to a similar functionality, if such functionality exists.

2016-10-22 02:10:15 +0200 answered a question How to select whole table with one mouse click

If you are referring to Writer, you can place the mouse pointer on the upper left corner of the table (on the outer side of the table) until it turns into a bottom-right-pointing arrow. If you then click the whole table will be selected.

If you use diacritical marks that much, try setting your keyboard layout to US international on your operating system. This will make it easier for your LibreOffice installation to get real.

2016-10-10 01:32:26 +0200 asked a question How do I make a paragraph clear a previous float?

In CSS I can use the "clear" property to force a paragraph to go after a floating object. How can I do the same in LibreOffice?

Case: if a question in a questionnaire has a wrapped object and the object is too big to fit in the question space, I'd like to force the next question to go absolutely after the floating object if the object is too big.

In addition to a Paragraph Style you might also have a Character Style applied. Character styles are located in the second button of the Styles and Formatting side pane.

I had the same problem too and it turned out that I had a driver issue on my system. I was using modesetting+vesa+fbdev but my X.org intel driver was missing. Reinstalling the xserver-xorg-video-intel driver helped. You can find further information in a bug I raised against LibreOffice, where other testers couldn't reproduce the problem:

Clean profile didn't help either. It's weird that OpenGL makes a difference on my system (even if it becomes unusable). [Edit] The OP confirms that clean profile doesn't help form him either.

The same happens to me. I turned on OpenGL and the active cell gets marked but the UI breaks really bad that I have to disable it again.

2015-03-07 06:27:59 +0200 commented question My Libre Office will not open

"No LibreOffice files will open" or "LibreOffice will not open"? One means that when you click on an existing document it fails, which could be related to file associations. The other means that when you open LibreOffice directly it fails, which could be related to a damaged shortcut or installation.

2015-03-07 04:24:23 +0200 commented answer How to format a Table of Contents

I'm talking blindly here, but I guess that, in your Mac, F11 is achieved by pressing Fn + Volume Up.

As for losing the changes, my guess is that you are directly editing the table of contents, and that is expected. The instructions I posted are correct: edit the Contents 1 style for modifying the formatting for the ToC entries that corresponds to lines taken from the Heading 1 style, and so on.

2015-03-07 03:54:45 +0200 answered a question Intended and Automatic Uses of Predefined Styles

Documentation, I don't know, but...

  • Some are used on generated indexes and tables. If you go to Insert » Indexes and Tables » Indexes and Tables... » Styles tab you will see how the resulting index automatically uses some predefined styles. Different types of tables (selectable in Insert » Indexes and Tables » Indexes and Tables... » Index/Table tab » Type) will require the use of different styles. For example, *Contents 1 to Contents 10 will map from Heading 1 to Heading 10 in a table of contents.

  • Inserting a table will use Table Contents by default for its cells.

  • Footer and Header are used when inserting the page footer and header, respectively.

  • Endnote and Footnote is pretty much self-explanatory.

  • Frame Contents is used when inserting a frame with Insert » Frame...

As for Character Styles, I know about the automatic use of Bullets and Internet Link, although Internet Link is not exactly applied, but used as a basis.

You can assign the keyboard shortcut to the execution of a macro.

  1. Follow the instructions at Recording a Macro from the LibreOffice Help to create a macro that sets the current font to the one of your choosing.

  2. As you tried before, use Tools » Customize » Keyboard to set Command + F to run the resulting macro.

2015-03-03 19:48:56 +0200 answered a question How to format a Table of Contents

Modify the 'Contents Heading' and 'Contents 1 to 10' styles:

  1. Press F11 to open the Styles and Formatting panel.
  2. Click on the row you want to adjust. You'll notice that the corresponding style for that row will get highlighted in the Styles and Fornatting panel.
  3. Right-click the style in the panel and choose 'Modify...'

Consider that this answer is refering to the default styles used to format a TOC, but the style mapping between heading level and TOC level (Heading 1 in the document --> Contents 1 in the TOC) can be changed in the Styles tab of the "Insert Index/Table" dialog.
