Since LO 5.1, the key to cycle through absolute and relative reference combinations is F4 by default. See this comment i

Thank you, @hoja420 ! We can even do simpler: =C1&" - "&C2

2016-11-16 03:02:15 +0200 commented question Difference between spreadsheet formats that use ".xlsx"

Because, contrary to the proprietary format XLS, XLSX is an open standard (part of OOXML), although I have heard that the documentation by Microsoft was poorly done (no ref), and the standardisation process was controversial (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standar...). What I didn't realise is that XLS, although being a proprietary binary, was eventually documented (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microso...). Was your first statement based on your experience?

Wonderful! That worked a treat. Do you know why the apostrophe could not be searched without using a regular expression, by any chance?

2016-11-15 03:52:46 +0200 asked a question Remove apostrophe and space before date in column

For some reason, an export of dates from a source (I think it was CSV export of a calendar from Evolution) gives me an apostrophe followed by a space before the actual dates.

I cannot figure out how to remove those two first characters from all the cells in that column. For some reason, I have absolutely no success using "search and replace".

I feel like it has to do with how the apostrophe is interpreted by Calc: it shows in the input line, but not when formatted in the cell (whereas the space actually does show). Looking for the character in "search and replace", be it in "value" or "formula", returns no result. Bug or feature?

See attached sample file to test. (Edit: it seems the attachment thingy does not work, here is the file: https://cloud.indie.host/index.php/s/...)

@gabix: how come? It seems counter-intuitive as XLSX has been "more documented" by Microsoft, right?

2016-11-03 01:55:30 +0200 asked a question Difference between spreadsheet formats that use ".xlsx"

In Calc (currently using 5.1.6), what is the difference between "Microsoft Excel spreadsheet 2007-2013" and "Office Open XML spreadsheet"? They both use the ".xlsx" extension.

And related to that: which one would be the "most compatible" with MS Office, i.e. the least likely to look different when sent to an Excel user, or the most "sustainable" solution (for data conservancy)?

2015-11-16 16:32:30 +0200 marked best answer How to apply a border format to the borders of all selected cells?

Hi there!

I would like to know if there is a way to select a range of cells that contain a few different kinds of borders, and then apply for example a particular thickness or line style to all the existing borders at once? This is in Calc.

Cheers

2015-11-12 16:03:01 +0200 marked best answer What kind of standard error do Calc and Charts use for error bars?

I tried to find in the documentation what is the calculation used to ad "standard error" error bars on a chart, but could not find any explanation.

I tried to create a chart with two versions:

  1. the automatic standard error error bars from the "Insert > error bars" menu
  2. the same but with my own calculated values for standard error of the mean, using the formula Std err = Std dev of the sample / square root of the sample size.

Here is the spreadsheet.

Could anyone explain to me why the resulting error bars are different from one to another?

Cheers

2015-05-17 12:43:12 +0200 commented answer Is there an automatic writing shortcut for subscripted numbers?

I didn't realise I could copy paste subscript characters (as opposed to number with a style applied to them) into the autocorrect settings, as I could not find them in the special character table. This works great, but is a bit tedious and awkward as it is limited to how many rules you are happy to create! Cheers.

2015-03-16 23:13:52 +0200 asked a question Is there an automatic writing shortcut for subscripted numbers?

In Writer and Calc, it is possible to use a shortcut to directly create a superscripted number by using the ^ symbol directly followed by a number.

I was wondering if there is an equivalent for subscripted numbers?

I am aware of the style keyboard shortcuts (ctrl+shift+B for subscripts) but I am looking into something more practical to use while writing. This would also be very useful to add extra entries in the Autocorrect list, especially for chemical formulas (it is possible to input a superscripted number thanks to the ^ shortcut, but not with copy+paste).

In the case this does not exist, the extra question is: how is the superscript ^ shortcut handled by LibreOffice? Or is it completely a system-level thing? (I just saw that I can use it right here too: ² ³ ⁴ ⁵ ⁶)

I am using LO 4.3.6 on Ubuntu 14.04

2014-03-03 21:25:53 +0200 marked best answer Is it possible to play a video on click in an Impress slideshow?

Dear all

I am adding videos on a presentation, and I noticed that the videos start to play directly when the slide appears.

I was wondering if it was possible to change a setting so the video only starts on a mouse click?

Cheers!

2014-02-05 01:54:09 +0200 marked best answer How to reorganise data in calc according to factors in columns

This might be difficult to get, but attached is an example, with on the left the original data and on the right the desired result.

I have several columns of factors and one column of variable. All the combinations of factors exist. I want to reorganise the data so instead of one variable column, I get the data split between different columns corresponding to the different values of one particular factor.

How do I do this in Calc?

2014-02-05 01:54:02 +0200 commented answer How to reorganise data in calc according to factors in columns

Great, thank you for that w_whalley! It works. I wished it would just reorganise the data and not reformat everything, but this will do for the moment :) As you said, it would be great to have a tool that is more straight-forward and would work in the case the factor combinations are not unique. Cheers!
