I have a list of names I want to put in alphabetical order.
What’s the way the list is represented? (Table? Sequence of paragraphs? List separator? …)

Highlight the list (whether or not in a table) and pick Tools-Sort, where there are various options for sorting. In a table you can select one column and sort only that, or select several and have all the columns follow the first.
Do you assume the list to consist of separate paragraphs if not being a column?
I cannot get the sort to work otherwise.
If a specific character is used as the list separator, I need to convert the list to a table first. In case the list elements are separated by hard line breaks, I don’t know a simple way at all.
What are my mistaks?
