How to create templates of Table of Contents

Hi all

I read carefully the Writer Guide, Chapter 12, and found nothing.
With the default layout there is no tab between the E# button, Chapter number element, and the E button, Chapter text element. The result is somewhat clumsy.
Therefore you need to add that tab for each level and not forget to assign a tab position for each otherwise the mess is even worse.
If you made changes in the structure of the document and update the Table of content it makes it return to its default layout. So you need to redo it and therefore go through the whole process which is rather cumbersome.
Is there a way to create a template that you could appy to any future TOC?

What is your exact procedure? Can’t reproduce behaviour. Do you update TOC with Tools>Update All or right-click in TOC and Update index? Both update TOC without changing previous TOC formatting, even when structure is modified (i.e. Heading n paragraphs added, erased or changed).

As has already been said, a table of contents is (in the vast majority of cases) only a portion of a document.

What is quite suitable for this type of object are Autotexts.

  • Create a table of contents that matches your preferences
  • Select the TOC section including the previous paragraph
  • Tools▸AutoText▸give a name, a shortcut, select a category (My AutoText if you have not created one)
  • Click AutoText button▸ New

That’s all

To insert the TOC into any document, type its shortcut then the F3 key (or go through the Tools menu)

OK Pierre-Yves, I just gave it a try. It works quite well and it’s very convenient. Interestingly it just pastes text, therefore it’s editable.

OK, this bug was fixed since I last tried it. Yet it’s not the main topic which is how, or if, it’s possible to create a template for TOCs that would avoid going through the cumbersome process of setting every single parameter.
The missing tab after the Chapter number element is really strange.

It’s not possible to create “templates” just for TOCs, but of course you can create a full document template containing a customized TOC and then use that template to create new documents.

To have the ability to define several custom TOCs is an useful idea, though. Strangely enough, I cannot find an enhancement request asking for this feature: You may consider creating such request on Bugzilla.

IMHO, having no template for TOC is probably based on the idea you have only one TOC per document. As a consequence, there is no interest to define a template because you would use it only once and it is already there (the TOC in the template document, I mean).

My idea was about templates you could use in any document. The current TOC feature is in a half completed status. The user has to finish the work. I’ll file a request in Bugzilla.
