capitalize first letter of every sentence

i cant seem to get capitals at the start of each sentence .i have gone to tools auto correct and options and it is ticked but it will not work,
. i have tried putting a full stop at the end of the last sentence and it still wont work.any suggestions on what i can try please i have googled for help and followed all the steps and everything seems right on my computer but i still cant get the capital letters to work.it is in writer thats all i use.i am using libreoffice 6.3.

Operating System and version? Version of LibreOffice? Is it Writer only? Does it do it in Calc as well?
What is the way you are typing? Do you put a space after the period/point before to write a new word? Which Language are you using/language setting?

You need to brush up your typing skills.

At best I would suggest that you make a habit of using the shift key when you need a capital. I recognize that many users rely on the automatic “sentence case”, and for people with some physical ailments it is really useful, but that tool also relies on some level of “keyboard discipline”:

To end a sentence, type period + space immediately after the last word.

  • If you have a space before the period, it is not taken as a sentence termination.
  • If you don’t have a space after the period, it is not taken as a sentence termination.

Both mistakes appear in your posted question, so I assume that those are typical of your typing.

Also, the sentence case function exists in two different spots:

  • For correcting what you type, as you are typing, there is an autocorrect setting.
  • For correcting what has already been typed, there is a menu item (I believe it is somewhere in the Format menu). I have never used it that I can recall, but I have seen comments to the effect that it does not work as intended.

I notice that hitting “Enter” to start a new paragraph doesn’t trigger capitalisation of the next word which is not correct.

This is not a solution to the initial question. It either belong to a comment to trigger more answers or to its own question (with a reference to this one).

Writer does not know what a sentence is. For humans, it is a semantic unit composed of words and terminated by a strong punctuation (e.g. period, interrogation point, exclamation point, but not comma or semi-colon).

Writer uses a more local algorithm.

First letter will be capitalised if it occurs after a strong punctuation suffixed to some character, followed by spaces (spaces are U+0020 SPACE, Enter or tab characters).

The very first non-space character of the document is also capitalised.

Therefore, at least one “space” is needed after a strong punctuation, but the “space” itself (notably when it is an Enter) is not sufficient to capitalise otherwise every word would be.

Personally, I consider this feature a nuisance and have disabled it. I prefer to explicitly use the Shift key, but YMMV.
