How can I put a chart on a separate sheet in Calc?

I know that the help file specifically states that charts cannot be on their own sheet. This is by far my most common use of charts in Excel. It allows charts to always be out of the way of the data and formulas on the worksheet, for example as the data and calcs grow, I don’t have to worry about the chart being in the way. In addition, it is a good way to be able to export, print, or share just the chart.

Is this something that could be implemented in LibreOffice?

Hi @JKEngineer,

qubit hits you with his karma stick

That should give you enough karma so you can comment on posts

@JKEngineer – I think it’s possible that the help file is mistaken or outdated. I believe you can put a chart on a separate sheet:

Please let me know if that works for you. If you’re successful, I’ll pass a message along to the appropriate folks to have them update the help file.

Thanks!

I feel all karmalized! thanks.

I tried the copy and paste to a new sheet and it works. The primary difference from Excel’s behavior seems to be that the chart creation dialogue does not provide for “put on separate sheet”.

The pasted copy on the separate sheet is linked back to the values on the source sheet. I found that it initially acts like a graphic, but the chart commands (chart type, axis, legend, data range, etc.) can be accessed by first double-clicking the graphic and then right clicking.

It also allows more than one chart to be put on the target sheet / chart sheet.

Pretty neat!

@JKEngineer – Good that this worked out for you. We’ve had a number of requests for the same “put on separate sheet” feature. Could you please file an enhancement bug and describe how this works in Excel? You can link to the bug from here as “fdo#12345”

This discussion gave me in idea for an enhancement with which Calc would be superior to EXCEL

Copy & Paste a chart to a separate sheet is a possibility but a bit cumbersome. On the other side having a typically smaller version beside the data can be very convenient if one wants/needs to modify some data and the graphical result is to be seen immediately.

Therefore the enhancement request would be a selection of 3 choices in the chart wizard.

  • place chart on the same sheet as data
  • place chart on a separate sheet
  • place chart on the same sheet as data and on a separate sheet

Would you regards this a reasonable enhancement request?

+1. I suggest that the selection mechanism have little icons or sketches to help the user visualize the difference between the options.

What should the default behavior be? Same sheet as data?

@qubir: Thanks for taking up the idea.

When I look at the chart wizard

I suggest to add “5. Location”.
Default on the data page might be the best.

I am not sure if I understand your ideas about icons. Do you think about icons in a toolbar? If so, it would be nice if the icons can be clicked on while on the data page and Calc would automaticially do the rest, and stop for name of the new sheet with the default name: “Chart x” or something similar.

@ qubit: Sorry for the typo in your name in my answer!

@ROSt53 – no worries :slight_smile:

Two notes:

  1. feel free to edit your Answer instead of posting a follow-up comment
  2. I didn’t get an email ping from your comment because there’s a space between “@” and “qubit”

@qubit1: Are you going to forward this enhancement request?

@ROSt53 – I’m a bit swamped with LO tasks now, but it would be great if you could file the enhancement. Please post the bug# as a comment on @jkengineer’s Answer above (or your’s – you expanded on the idea!), so it’s easier to see that one has been filed.

Thanks!

Enhancement request is forwarded.

I hope we will get this feature soon.

@qubit1 I did not know that “@name” triggers an email ping.

@ROSt53, Take a look at your User profile → subscriptions → “Comments and posts mentioning me”.

That config option will send you email whenever someone uses your @name in a post. Hopefully it’s on by default!

@qubit1 Thanks for that hint. It was at least switched on together with other options. Now I know and optimize my settings.
