How do I save a file so others can open it

I saved a file with the extension .odt. Others cannot open it. What extension should I use?

Do the others have LO installed?

Short answer:
In order to open an ODT file you have to use a software from the provided list (see below). If not, you can always save (Menu File\Save as into one of the number of formats Libreoffice can write).

Elaborated answer:
ODT is the Open Document file format for word processing documents (mostly text). Open Document File formats are OASIS standard and an ISO/IEC international standard ISO/IEC 26300 which means that they can be opened (and saved) by many aplications (not only libre office, which uses it as native file format), like the following ones (source: Wikipedia):

  • AbiWord
  • Adobe Buzzword
  • Apache OpenOffice
  • Atlantis Word Processor
  • Calibre ebook viewer, converter, editor, and manager
  • Calligra Suite
  • Corel WordPerfect
  • Office X6
  • Evince Gnumeric
  • Google Docs IBM Lotus
  • Symphony
  • Inkscape exports.odg
  • KOffice
  • LibreOffice
  • Microsoft Office 2003 and Office XP (with the Open Source OpenXML/ODF Translator Add-in for Office)
  • Microsoft Office 2007 (from service pack 2 release) supports ODF 1.1 (Windows only)
  • Microsoft Office 2010 supports ODF 1.1 (Windows only)
  • Microsoft Office 2013 supports ODF 1.2 (Windows only)
  • Microsoft OneDrive / Office Web Apps
  • NeoOffice
  • Okular
  • ONLYOFFICE
  • OpenOffice.org
  • Scribus imports .odt and .odg
  • SoftMaker Office
  • Sun Microsystems StarOffice
  • TextEdit
  • WordPad(Windows 7) partial support.
  • Zoho Office Suite

In case the person you want to send your work can’t access any of these softwares, you can always make use of any of the vast number of file formats into which Libre office writer can save/export: like MS’ infamous word documents formats: doc and docx (amongst others)

Be noted M$ Office doesn’t fully support ODF, so don’t expect Office to show ODF correctly, let alone save it correctly in any case.
