I saved a file with the extension .odt. Others cannot open it. What extension should I use?

Short answer:
In order to open an ODT file you have to use a software from the provided list (see below). If not, you can always save (Menu File\Save as into one of the number of formats Libreoffice can write).

ODT is the Open Document file format for word processing documents (mostly text). Open Document File formats are OASIS standard and an ISO/IEC international standard ISO/IEC 26300 which means that they can be opened (and saved) by many aplications (not only libre office, which uses it as native file format), like the following ones (source: Wikipedia):

In case the person you want to send your work can’t access any of these softwares, you can always make use of any of the vast number of file formats into which Libre office writer can save/export: like MS’ infamous word documents formats: doc and docx (amongst others)
Be noted M$ Office doesn’t fully support ODF, so don’t expect Office to show ODF correctly, let alone save it correctly in any case.
