Is there any reason why selecting text, and choosing “Clear formatting”, would cause text to become Italic? (pics included)

Is there any reason why selecting text, and choosing “Clear formatting”, would cause the text to become Italic?

Before choosing “Clear formatting”:

I don’t touch styles, but I checked, and The Default style is Regular. Weird.

“Paragraph styles” was on default, but not “Character styles”. If you use “Apply style” from the toolbar

, it only applies “Paragraph styles”? Anyways, got it.
