How to open up the default LibreOffice start screen after a document is opened

If you call the command, libreoffice with no arguments, it will bring up a screen showing your recent documents, along with options for creating or opening documents of various types.

If you have a document already opened, the “libreoffice” command will only take you to that opened document. You can no longer see that default screen.

My question is how can you get that screen back without having to first close all your document windows.

Idealistically there might be a way to get to it from a clickable option within the opened document. If that isn’t possible, is there some other way, such as a command argument.

No way to do it currently, unfortunately (unless you want to run a different instance of LO with another profile, and thus with different history etc.). There’s an intention to make it somewhat like backstage, but it’s just an intention.

Hopefully, the developers add priority to this valuable feature.

Looking at the icon images of the recent documents of various types is a valuable interface for both novice and experienced users. Also seeing the choices of the application to call for creating a new document is equally invaluable.

I would love this feature too. I can’t believe it doesn’t exist. Surely, it is a very common requirement to want to access a second document from within the current document?
