Functions do not execute in Calc cells. They just appear as text. This is in LibreOffice 4.1 running in Windows 7, 32 bit

I have tried re-installing Libre Office, tried re-booting Windows, and all the usual procedures. I have previously run Calc satisfactorily, and opening an old spreadsheet allows me to enter formulas in an ordinary way. I’d appreciate any suggestions on dealing with this!

Can you expand on how you enter formulas, and give some example formulas that don’t work?

Can you check whether you have in Extras(Tools) → Otions → LibreOffice Calc → View the option “Show formulas” activated? If this is activated, Calc alwas shows the formula instead of the calculated value.

Another test: Please hit Ctrl + F8. In what colour do you see now your formulas? (Formulas should be green, values blue and text in black)

Thank you Gerry! Your instructions to un-check the “Display Formulas” in cells worked! You saved me from having to buy MS Excel, and instead I donated a few bucks ($) to Libre.
I wonder why my installation of Libre 4 defaulted to “Display Formulas”? Users want to see output, not code, in screens. It’s as though instead of a web page a URL just showed the HTML input!
Whatever, a big thanks to you!

I’m used to use “Ctrl ~” (Control + tilde) to toggle display formula on/off.

@psokolow could you mark the answer as ‘correct’ by clicking the check mark?
