I reverted from Win10 to Win7, now LO won't install!

I tried out Windows 10, and while I was using it, I updated my LibreOffice from 4.4 to 5.0 (I think). I found there was a compatibility problem with my laptop and Win10, so I used the built-in tool to restore my Windows 7 install.

When I did this, it removed the newly-installed version of LibreOffice, but the old version had been deleted during the installation. Unfortunately, although almost all the files are gone from my ProgramFiles, LO 4.4 has left some trace on my computer, because every time I try to install it again (any version), it informs me that it can’t find ‘LibreOffice_4.4.0_Win_x86.msi’ in order to uninstall the “old verson” of LibreOffice, which really isn’t installed anyway!

Can somebody help me get my LibreOffice back?

I’m using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, in English and had (apparently) installed LO v4.4.0, in English as well.

Hi Kenley

The most common fix advised for this is to reinstall your OS (no, really). Let’s see if we can avoid that.

Here are some sane steps that can be taken:-

  1. M$ has provided a “Microsoft Fix-It” website:-

"Automatically repair issues that block program installation or removal because of corrupted registry keys."

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/mats/program_install_and_uninstall

Applies to the following versions:-

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (+ R2)
  • Windows Server 2008 (+ R2)
  • Windows Server 2012 (+ R2)
  • Microsoft Windows XP
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows 7
  • Windows 8 (+ 8.1)

This website is a replacement for The Windows Installer Cleanup utility (MSICUU2.exe, retired by M$ as they said that it corrupted some Registry instead of fixing them (whoops)), and also a replacement for the former http: //support.microsoft.com/fixit/, which has been removed without redirection.

  1. The MS Website in the previous step is also reported to have a “super-effective” version of Windows Update (a corrupted Registry can prevent viable system Updating as much as it can prevent non-M$ program installation/update). Keep making use of that until no more updates are required. MS system updates are vital for both system integrity & security.
  2. (if none of the above removes the old LO from the Registry)

    i) Download the 4.4.0 MSI
ii) Right-click on the MSI & choose ‘remove’.

Previous LO versions can be downloaded at:

    Index of /libreoffice/old

If this helps then please tick the answer (:heavy_check_mark:)

…and/or show you like it with an uptick ()

My first attempt would be to use Wise Program Uninstaller, which is free. If its Safe uninstall, or whatever it’s called, doesn’t work, then go to Force uninstall.

It could be that your old “user profile” was preserved in the restore?

Check the documentation for help in locating it; scroll down that document for guidance on removal or backup. Perhaps removing (or simply moving!) it will release the jam.
