All files inserted files into Master doc are starting from page 1 and others

I created a template with all the paragraph/frame/header/footer styles I want. But when I am trying to create the Master document based on above ott file, ( file> send >Master document) it is giving error, it is saying “can’t create document”.

I created a odt file from the above template and tried to create the master document on that, I still get the same error.

I created a blank master document and I inserted 2 odt ( these odt files are created based on different template) files into Master document, I see all the pages inserted from page 1 of the master document. Some where page break is not happneing. I couldn’t figure out what to set in the my odt files. they are single page with headers/footers/frame. are there any where I have to set page break?. when I put the page break in the single page, it shows 2 pages in the individual odt files, which I dont want.

Where do I see page styles?. I couldn’t find them.

Thank you

Styles and master/included documents is a rather tricky topic.

Splitting a long document into smaller ones which are then “glued” together by the master document often results in a more efficient use of computer resources and a greater ease (and comfort) of document maintenance. But it can also lead to seemingly strange results if you do not take into account some factors.

One of these is the fact that the styles definition in the included documents do not override those in the master. This is usually harmless because styles are the same on both sides (the best way to guarantee that is to use a common template), but you can take advantage of it.

In your case, you start your included document with a paragraph under a specific style (Heading x seems appropriate for that as the first paragraph is ofter some form of titling). This style has no page break in the “slave” document so that it prints single page. In the master, you modify the Heading x definition to cause a page break.

If you find this impratical, there is another possibility. As you have noticed you can insert “Text” between the included files. This “Text” dwells only in the master document and is “private” to it. It can be an empty paragraph with a brand new style you can name Break with the sole purpose of causing a page break. All other attributes are set so that it occupies the minimum space: font size 2pt, above/below 0cm. The space cannot be reduced to zero so you’ll see the subsequent text is not flushed to the top margin.

There is lot of unlearning of how I used MS Word and how i used for my occasionally for the simple purposes before I could make sense or understand the flow of styles from one ott → odt → odm. Thank you

thank you for your input. unfortunately I don’t think I was successful in resolving this issue. 2nd approach ( adding small text style with manual break) is not feasible as I have 100 individual sub documents to be included in the master document ( at least as per our current plan). first approach of putting manual break is not working either. To debug where the issue is, I simplified my test as follows and want to have a clean start.

first aim is to create CLEAN master document from template.

1.Created to new document (odt). Added a new page Style “styTestPagestyleHF” from default style. only difference in I enabled header and footer and put background as the yellow.
2. saved the above document as template (MyTestTemplate) using FILE> templates> save of template in “My templates” folder.
At this point I have a clean Template.
3. Now I want to create the Clean Master document using the MyTestTemplate. For this, I did FILE> NEW> TEMPLATE I see my MyTestTemplate. I double clicked on the template. It opened Untitled file. There I did FILE > SEND> Create Master document. Now I get the error “Can’t create document”. I am not sure what is going wrong. If I understand correctly, the flow is this
Custom styles will be in StandardTemplate . We use this StandardTemplate to the create the masterdocument , as well as the subdocuments. Any changes we do to the custom styles will propagate to the Masterdocument. Is this right?. Sorry for being dense. Appreciate for your input.

I thought it may be trying to Send an empty document to a Master, but just tested, works fine.

What version of LO are you using? What OS?

Another way … you will need a few pages in the master doc for cover, ToC, Index, etc. - so add a few pages to the doc.

You can create a master doc directly and then attach the template using a Template Changer extension.

I am on LO 5.2.5.1 on windows10. As suggested I creaed the blank new master page, added sample text boxes in the next 5 pages like cover page, blank, title page, copy rights by manually doing page break. then I attached the template using FILE > template > assaign template (current document) . It didn’t complain and I see the Testpagestyle(with yellow background page style). I saved it. So it created master document. Thank you. have template manager, but dont see any specific menu.Above one?

Next step I want to attach the odt file ( yellow bavcground pagestyle one) to the 6th page. If I insert it from navigator, suddenly all the first 5 pages becoming yellow. IF I create a new section ( named’ Introsection) at the end of page5 and put the cursor in page 6 , ‘insert’ odt file from navigator, all pages become yellow again. BUT, If I link the odt file in the ‘Introdesction’ ( FORMAT > sections> Introsection>Link> filename), odt file with yellow background limits to 6th page alone.Bug?

Added to above, when i linked the odt file to master file custom section, i was not getting header to master file. The style used both

is same ( master, ott, odt) and has header and footer and odt file i added some text to header. Some how, header is not coming to master. Regarding odt,s page style coming to other pages in other sections of master- how to bring page style from odt to only master section alone. Any settings in template page style?

Hard to follow what you have done above.

The page style assigned is displayed in the status bar when the cursor is in that page.

Page style names assigned in the sub- documents come thru, but the master doc template controls the look of those styles.

In the master doc check the page styles assigned for each page by looking at the status bar.

Sub-documents that you include will automatically be in their own new section.

No need to manually create sections for that reason.

I want to bring in the header of the sub document into master document and there is no header in the master document as of now. Sub document header is not coming to the Master document and master 1st page style is changing with file insert. If i want to do that, are there any way?. Other choice i have is not use the header for the recipe name that I thought of putting in the header. ott and odt, odm doc. based on ott are here https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BxcAy8NTN__MZUxFTWxkOVEtd2s
