How can I connect to my outgoing mail server?

Hi. I have a question about mail merge. I’m using version 5.4.5, and can’t connect to my outgoing mail server. I think I need to use port 587 for my mail server – is there some reason that this won’t work for libreoffice? I tried Libreoffice versions 4 and 6 but they crashed before getting through the mail merge wizard.

I’d really appreciate any help! Thanks.

There is no email client to use in LO. Can you explain what it is you are trying to do in a bit more detail?

send a document via email

I think that the following steps should solve your problem. I’m using LO 5.4.6.2 (x64) on Windows 10 (x64).

  • From a Writer document go to Tools>Options, then LibreOffice Writer>Mail Merge Email then enter enter your name, E-mail address and Server name (in my case this was mail.btinternet.com).
  • The port was set to 25 by default, just accept this (this is what I did).
  • Test the settings by clicking on Test Settings at the bottom right in the window. In my case this had no errors, so I tested things by opening a Writer document that I wanted to send as an email attachment.
  • Then I went to File>Send>Email document, this opened up my email program (Thunderbird in my case) where I just needed to enter the usual email recipient and message before sending the email as usual. LibreOffice had set up the attachment for me.

If this solves your problem please tick the answer and perhaps favour me with an up vote by way of encouragement.

This does not solve the issue for me; I’m using Mac OS 10.14.3. I got so far as to configure LO to the e-mail server, which passed its network connection, all good. But, I have a document in active window and File>Send>E-mail document brings the error box LibreOffice was unable to find a working e-mail configuration. With a suggestion to save it to disc and do it through your client. I had changed the client in LO preferences to mail.google.com; otherwise it defaults to Apple mail.app which I do not use. Anybody out there got an ideal?

If you come to this from Calc (as you would for mail-merge), there is NO entry in Options for Writer. You MUST be actually running lowriter, then Tools>Options does indeed have Writer and Mail Merge entries. This is almost certainly a bug.

LibreOffice can connect directly to mail service (i.e. act as mail client software) only for mass mailing through Writer mailmerge. Setup explained by BillPodmore, but this is not what you need.

For sending current document as mail attachment, LibreOffice relies on the default installed mail client. As far as I know, you cannot use webmail for this. You have to connect an installed mail client to your mail service, and register that client software as the default mail handler. Proper mail client software is not a component of LibreOffice, but is a basic component of most user systems (Apple’s Mail.app in your case).

This does not stop you from using webmail (or other mail client software) as your go-to solution. With an IMAP connection everything is on the server anyway, so you will most likely see the same lists in inbox, sent, etc. with the same unread/read/flag/important status indicator for each message, regardless of which client/front-end you are using at the time.
