Opening documents very slow (unless one document is open already)

LO 6.0.3.2 / Ubuntu 18.04 (1:6.0.3-0ubuntu1)

Opening odt or ods (or docx) files is very slow (txt files open without delay). LibreOffice Writer or Calc window opens in a blink of an eye, but opening any document takes 6-7 seconds thereafter. Even a simple odt file with just one word in it takes the same amount of time, which is very annoying.

It doesn’t make a difference whether I’m double clicking a file, opening a file from within LO, starting LO with a filename from the command line, using safe mode… Always the same 6-7 second delay. The only case when there is no delay is when one document (no matter what) has already been opened in the same or another LO window. Once all windows are closed, the first document is once again slow to open, no matter what it contains. LO displays “Loading document…” for 6-7 seconds.

I’ve purged and reinstalled LO and deleted ~/.config/libreoffice, but nothing seems to help. Any ideas / help? Thank you!

The problem seems to be smart card / reader related. Inserting a smart card into the reader drops the delay down to about two seconds. Unplugging the reader does not remove the delay, however. It gets back to the original 6-7 s instead.

Is there any way to disable LO from trying to use the smart card reader in vain?

You might want to file a bug report to bugs.documentfoundation.org to notify developers.

@liuhanen Since you already found this is definitely smart card reader related, you should check also if this is not an OS problem (drivers, buffers etc.)
