LibreOffice file association

My company is preparing to migrate from Lotus Symphony to LibreOffice and currently have a problem with file association.

I have tried installing Symphony, Uninstalling Symphony, then Libre Office. This does not associate files automatically.

I have tried installing Symphony, Libre Office, then Uninstalling Symphony(with command lines for associating files to Libre). This method doesn’t set them automatically. If you click on a Word doc, it will ask you to pick a program to run it. Libre Office is the first choice.

I have manually tried associating Libre through the command line using the assoc command and checking the ftype association. This did not set the file associations either.

Anyone have any other ideas? Thanks

You do not mention your OS, so let’s assume that it is Windows.

These are normally Registry issues, and can get very complex indeed. Try the following, in order:-

  1. Installation fix
(This is OO-2; it may still work with later version LO)
  2. Properties on the file-link
    (last post by CarolDW)
  3. Does the .EXE file have a “/regserver” option? (try /help)

Otherwise, you will be into some horrible Registry hacking, which I would not want to try myself. Here’s a middling-difficult suggestion:-

The “.INF” (driver information) file for a program is almost entirely Registry Information. They are plain-text files, and normally include Registry entries for file associations as part of the file makeup. They are normally all stored in the same place:

<WINDOWS>\INF
(or something similar)

Find the correctly-similar file (I would suggest perhaps LO/OO/MS-Office) & you should be able to (relatively easily) draw up your own menu of file associations. Look here to find examples of REG files suitable to make file associations under Vista/Win-7 + how to MERGE them.

If this helps then please tick the answer (:heavy_check_mark:).

If you’re really using Windows. you can try FileTypesMan to customize file associations.
