General questions about Ask L-O

  1. Could somebody tell me, what is the generic name for the Ask LibreOffice interface? Is it still a forum or is there another name for this style of interface?

  2. Where did it come from or what is it based on?

  3. How do users make suggestions about this interface to the community?

I recently learned there used to be an actual forum. If I were to make a suggestion, I would like to see background information (questions 1-3) appear on the Help page. I would also like to see a thread kept alive when there is a dicussion in the comments section. Also, asklo should be allowed as one of the required tags when you post a question.

There you’ll find additional info:

(1) Link at the right margin of this page:

Ask on the TDF wiki

(2) Link at the bottom margin of this page:

Powered by Askbot version 0.7.48

(3) See also the questions tagged meta, and/or tagged asklibo, and/or tagged askbot.

I am just adding to what @manj_k has already stated in the comments against the question.

I refer to this site as a “forum” although it is more correctly a “question & answer style site” (list of similar sites), such as those in the StackExchange Network e.g., Stack Overflow, Super User, Ask Ubuntu, etc.

How do users make suggestions about this interface to the community?

In addition to raising a question here, you can also post a question over on the AskBot forum. Getting changes made is dependent upon what is considered under LibreOffice / The Document Foundation authority and what is considered under AskBot authority. If this site has a problem (bug) then it is an LO issue and needs to have a corresponding bug raised via the bug submission assistant using the WWW/ASKLIBREOFFICE component. If you are requesting an enhancement, then it is likely your are requesting a change in the underlying AskBot software this site runs on and so you would need to make this request on the AskBot forum (they do not appear to have a bug tracker).

That forum was the precursor to this one and is still active. I am a moderator over there. I personally find it easier to use than this one and it currently has upwards of ten times the amount of traffic (could easily be much more). That may change over time, although the simplicity of use is a big advantage IMO.

+1 for the first and the second statement …

@manj_k  I always try to be honest in my responses, even when I find it painful. I changed my sig over on the other site (about 1-2 months ago) to point here so hopefully there has been a corresponding increase in traffic in that time. I know visibility can be an issue, so given the number of posts I now have over there, it should be a giant sign pointing this way. Do you ever compare traffic figures with Sam? I am mainly going by the “Views” figures.

@oweng – Respect!

My way of thinking: Let a hundred flowers bloom.

Maybe, someday I can take the time to read also posts on http://en.libreofficeforum.org

Yes, I knew you had been over there before me  I completely appreciate the time-factor. None of us have enough. With the two forums being as different as they are they likely appeal to different sets of users.
