Cannot seem to change the format of boxes on a spreadsheet. Whatever I do I cannot enter simply 'May 2018'. It comes up as a non descript number or a date such as 01/05/18. I can't find any button that will correct it and allow what I want type in the box. Very frustrating, beginning to wonder whether Office Windows is worth investing in!!! ps and this system of trying to get assistance is absolutely driving me nuts!!

Calc formats the information typed at a date. Format the cell as text.

Caveat, entering data as text does not preserve the date information, so date calculations with the entered data are not possible. Btw, instead of formatting with text before entering data, data can also be preceded with a single ' apostrophe, which prevents numeric detection.

Instead of the text input solution you can also format the existing date data using a MMMM YYYY number format code.
