"Jumping" sheet tabs

I have a Calc document with many sheets. We’re talking on the order of 100 sheets, too many to ever see them all, no matter how much of the left-right scroll bar I eat up to give to sheet tab navigation. I’ve even taking to giving my sheets short, cryptic names. Still too many sheet tabs to avoid navigation.

Anywho: When I click on the sheet tabs, they often change their position left and right relative to the document window. OpenOffice and LibreOffice have behaved this way for a long time, so I assume that this is behavior as programmed and not a bug. From my perspective, however, it would be nice if the tabs would stay put. I’m quite capable of navigating through the tabs. It’s annoying that the application makes assumptions about where it thinks I want the sheet tabs to be, and then has the audacity to act on those assumptions without my input.

Does anyone here know of a way to solve this problem or work around it? I’m not a programmer, so I cannot solve the problem at the level of the source code. Thanks.

No need to suffer with short sheet names. Use the Navigator (F5). It’s easy to scroll down the vertical list of sheets to the one you want. Double-click a sheet name to move to it. You can dock the Navigator window to the side of the Calc window if you wish.

Another option is to create an index page with hyperlinks to the other pages and place it at the beginning or end so it is easy to get to.

Hi @CSmith,

A couple of suggestions for you:

  1. Talk to the Design Team – perhaps on the ‘UX Advise’ list? https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design
  2. File a bug and mark it as an ‘enhancement’

It sounds like you could really use a tool for multiple rows of tabs like this firefox add-on:

Good luck working with your plethora of sheets!
