running ubuntu 16.04.2 32-bit. All libreoffice programs work except Writer. It looks like it wants to run and has the title bar at top and then just disappears as if it never was started.
I have tried removing the .config/libreoffice folder, uninstalling using apt purge and then re-booting and re-installing. I don't know what else to try.

Did you install from an Ubuntu repo? What if you install from the official site?

You might want to add the PPA to your /etc/apt/sources.list file to get more recent updates automagically. The versions in the official *buntu repos get updated ONLY to fix security issues. The current PPA for LO is libreoffice-5.4 and stays up to date.
