I am writing a dissertation which requires me to number the table of contents etc. with Roman numerals (i, ii, iii) and then switch to arabic numbers for the rest (1,2,3). Does anyone know how to do this?

Use different page styles for those pages that should have roman numerals, and those that should have arabic. The style should define the kind of numerals used (Format-Page-Page tab-Page numbers).

If I do that it changes all the page numbering styles. If I tell it not to add the same style to the next page, then it refuses to apply those styles to any pages but the first one.

When you create a document, you want that some text starts on another kind of page. So, you put cursor to the paragraph that should start on next page style, go to paragraph properties, text flow, and check "insert page break before - with page style - select required style - if required, also adjust page number".
