Add french signs

Dear team,

I’ve just bought a new computer with an American keyboard.

I often have to use French signs like ´ ` ^ for my job. They are not represented on the American keyboard. I know I can find them in the menu, but it takes quite some steps and it’s pretty annoying if you need one or more in each sentence you use. I wonder if it’s possible to put them somewhere on the task bar so that I just have to click on them once to insert them in my text.

The US-International keyboard layout is almost the same that the normal US keyboard, but with dead keys that helps to insert accents: you type ` (nothing happens) then the vowel and voila!: à

So set your OS’s keyboard layout to use US-International and you’ll be fine.

BTW, LibO 6 will add a “favourite” and “recently used” characters to the Insert symbol tool.

I´ve just tried changing my keyboard settings and understand what you mean. It seems to be OK now. I´ve found out how to insert the accent signs. It will make my life much easier. Thanks!

The Alt Gr keys are known as level 3 and level 4 on the keyboard, lowercase and uppercase are level 1 and level 2.

I find it is useful to have a layout chart to help use the Alt GR keys on the international keyboard as they are not shown on the keys, usually with the exception of the € key. The keyboard program on Linux systems provides this function. There will be something similar for Windows systems. However searching Google with “Keyboard American international layout” will give a number of examples. This is especially useful for certain keys. For example ç and Ç are found on the Cc key on the English keyboard and on the key to the right of Mm on the American.

Do not forget you can use the LibO spellcheck set to French to highlight any missing accents.
