1600+ Page Large File Suddenly (Not Working)

I’ve gone to Tools/Options and have increased the memory load. Use for LibreOffice 500 MB; Memory per object 30MB

It used to work just fine but now, specifically, whenever I delete an “enter/return” space it freezes up. Are there any upcoming updates that will address this issue/ and/or add more stability for larger files?

My OS is Intel i5-6600k 3.50gGHz with 16GB RAM on a 64bit system.

I’m using version LO 5.4.2 64bit.

The file I’m trying to work on is 2MB.

I also use the navigational pane heading for chapter organization so I can easily jump from section to section. I haven’t found another program that does this other than microsoft word, but I really don’t want to switch back to that since they’re doing the monthly payment nonsense.

OS? LO version (including bitness)?

In the meanwhile: if you use 32-bit LO, I suggest you to switch to 64-bit (if possible).

It seems to be remembering a lot of information from all the pages it has to shift to a higher line.

If your document exhibit a logical structure (i.e. several relatively independent parts), try to split it into a master document (merging the parts for printing or display purpose) and several “included” smaller files. You will thus avoid the overhead of loading and managing in memory “inactive” parts. It is much easier to deal with shorter documents. If you need to work simultaneously on several files, you can still open several windows which is lighter than a single big file.

The odd thing with this is I can add or get rid of bullet points just fine without it’s memory overworking. I wonder why it’s different with paragraph text. I need to be able to work on this book, in whole form at some point. I’ve tried editing sections of it on a new file, making them more condensed and replacing that bit in the big file, but it just stalls out. I really don’t want to go back to lame-ol Microsoft Word, but if this persists I have no choice but to.

I assume that you are storing your document as a normal Writer .odt file. The LibO styles give you an easy way to control the document formatting and automatically provide navigator points in the document. The Navigator (PF11 and select Navigator) will then allow you to move from heading to heading, image to image, heading, footer bookmarks, hyperlinks etc. This is a huge benefit working with a document.

Many of these functions may not be available if you are using other formats to store your document.

I have an odt and a docx version of the document. I mainly use the docx. I’ve tried both and both freeze up from the same issue.
