I'm writing a document that has many images. I'm labeling each image as "Figure-x" where I'm manually incrementing x.

EXAMPLE OF FIGURES AND TEXT IN THE DOCUMENT: Figure-2: ... (Image for figure-2) ... In the text I say something like "Figure-2 is the design size layout for ....."

Later in the document I have: Figure-3: ... (Image for Figure-3) ... I might say "Figure-3 shows the best way to ....."

You get the idea.

WHAT I WANT TO DO: I want to synchronize the label "Figure-2" to the all of the "Figure-2" references in the text. and synchronize the label for "Figure-3" to all of the references to "Figure-3" in the text.

Later on, I might want to move (Figure-3 and its accompanying text) before (Figure-2 and its accompanying text). When I do that, I'll change the label For Figure-3 to Figure-2 -and- change the label for Figure-2 to Figure-3.

I want all references in the text for Figure-2 to change to Figure-3 since the label for the image was changed to Figure-3. Similar for Figure-2.

Is this possible in Libre Writer? I'm using version (x64).

Writer offers a captioning system that not only keep track of numbering but also allows you to use cross references that update automatically. On a given picture, Right click → Insert caption. You can overwrite the "category" to any value you want and then pick that value from the drop down menu for the next figure.

On Insert → Field → More fields → Cross reference you'll be able to select any figure caption just by picking it from the corresponding list and insert a reference by number, page, etc.

Wonderful response! It works!

Thank you so much, Raptor88

PS: I don't see how to mark your response as the answer.

Whoops, I saved and then closed the document. When I opened it again all of the images are gone. Luckily I had a backup copy before I did the Insert caption thing so I'm back to where I was before this happened.

Guess I'll just stay with my previous method and manually change my cross references.

Thanks though, Raptor88

@Raptor88 I've been using captions and cross references on Writer for the last twenty years without a problem. I think the lost of images were caused by an unrelated issue. On which format do you save your file? Always use odt!

To mark an answer as "accepted" you have the check mark to the left of the answer: click on that mark to make it green.

Oh, that's probably why the images disappeared. I was using the .doc format. I've been using the .doc format in case I need to send documents to my friends who all use MS Word. I'll use the odt format for this document and when I know I won't be sharing with friends. Lesson learned! Thanks.
