bulleted list restarts outline heading numbering

Hello,

my document contains a paragraph with style=Heading 3 followed by a 1-line bulleted list (style = “default style”), followed by a second outline heading (style= Heading 3) :

My problem is that on the second outline heading the numbering has been reset; Here is what it looks like

3.1.5 First Paragraph with Style = Heading3

  • 1 line bulleted list

1.1.1 Second paragraph with style = Heading3

I would expect the outline number of the second paragraph to be 3.1.6: It seems like the numbering
has been restarted

I have isolated the cause of the problem to the bulleted list; If i delete the second paragraph, then remove the bulleting from the 1 line list, then re-enter the second paragraph, THEN right click over the second paragraph and select “continue previous numbering” then the numbering is as expected

I am on libreoffice 5.3.7.2 (x64)

Can’t reproduce the symptom. How did you initially create your bulleted list? i.e. manually activating bullet with toolbar button or modifying paragraph style? How did to exit bullet mode?

Hello Ajlittoz: I created the bulleted list by selecting the entire line, then pressing the toolbar “bulleted list” button: And I removed the bullets the same way

I also want to mention that my document was first created using microsoft word

Is there any way for me to add my document to this thread ?

Is your document saved as .odt or .doc/.docx? When styles are at stake, there is a huge conceptual difference between M$ Word and LO Writer.
Wrt to attaching files, you need more karma points to be able to upload. Try with some other file server and give a link to the file.

Hello, I have discovered that this problem only occurs in those of my documents that were originally microsoft word documents. If I create a libre office document from scratch, that document does not have the problem

There are many strange things in your document:

  • para “1.1 Section 1.1” is styled /Heading 2* but this level is not supposed to be numbered

  • blank para following bulleted list is styled Heading 3 but has no number and is not collected in ToC

  • faulty para “1.1 should be 3.1” is style Heading 3 has only 2 numbers but this is consistent with your chapter numbering settings

I clear all direct formatting but …

(continued) … your chapter numbering seems to be broken: wherever I add a Heading 1 para, it starts numbering from 1, even where the sequence is apparently correct.

Hello Ajlitoz, I agree, my chapter numbering in tools->outline numbering, does contain some errors: I had not noticed that: However, I think that fixing those errors, plus, removing the blak paragraph styled heading3 that follows the line with text=“bulleted list” does not fix the problem: I am pretty convinced that the problem is caused by “switching OFF” “bulleted list”, on the line with text=“bulleted list” : I have proved this myself: If you do that, then switch the style of the line

continued… then switch the style of the line “should be sec3.1” from heading3 to heading2 you will see the numbering change from 1.1 to 3.1 (i.e.fixed)

Thank you. Nearly went nuts trying to solve the restart problem. So simple from the R-click contest menu on the paragraph.

Despite my attempts, I could not prevent numbering restart or fix your chapter numbering.

Since something is broken in chapter numbering (I’m not surprised, I experienced such behaviour when I worked in mixed Word/Writer environment), my advice would be to create a reference document with LO Writer, to save it in .odt format and to work on this one.

When you enter the collaborative phase with Word aficionados, just export your document to .doc format. I indeed wrote .doc and not .docx because there are less compatibility issues with the older .doc format.

Optionally, you can also pass your .odt document because M$ Word understands (partially but it usually is enough) ODF since at least 2009.

I had the same problem and found a solution.
The styles of my Headings (“Heading 1”, “Heading 2”, etc…) were based on “Default style” and note the default “Heading” style. Modify that in the style editing dialog.
After that, I erase one by one the style of the headings in the document and set the style “Heading X” for each.
Now it works.

Edit: I replace “Title” by “Heading”. It’s a bad translation from french.

Are you in the same context (mixed LO Writer-MS Word environment)?

Built-in Title style does not participate in chapter numbering. It is an independent style for the book title on the cover page. All heading styles Heading n are based on Heading style.

If your Title n (or built-in Heading n) work when based on *Default Style/ and not when on Heading, then this may be a clue that something is wrong on Wird side. Word has a much less elaborate concept of styles then Writer. Do you confirm that styles should not be based on intermediate styles, but only on Default Style for compatibility with Word?

Yes it’s a mixed environment Word - Libroffice Writer.
I made a mistake, it’s “Heading” not “Title”, it’s a bad translation from french. I edited the post.
On monday i will try to open the document with word and confirm you if the modifications are compatible with word.
