Whenever I open a document in Writer, the top of the document is occupied by the navigator. In the past the navigator was separate and moveable independently, but somehow it's got attached permanently. It's a great nuisance, taking up valuable document space. How do I detach it?

The other answer tells you how to hide it. To detach it, simply click-and-hold anywhere in its upper area (with the little "menu" type icons), and drag it over your document's text area.

You'll see a dotted line appear, outlining its shape in that location. It can be docked against any edge, or float free. When it has the "square" shape, away from any window margin, release the mouse-click, and you'll have your navigator "separate and moveable independently" again.

Use the same approach to dock it in any of the other edges, should you so wish.
