If you are using Windows or Ubuntu Linux, you can open one document from your list of My Documents in one window or “instance” of the program (Writer, Calc) and open the second document from My Documents in a second instance of the program. Position the two windows wherever you want. You can copy and paste between the two windows but you just have to be careful about which window is the active one at any given time.
