My display shows the font in an ugly yellow-orange color that I cannot change - what's wrong?

The file was originally created in Pages and exported to a Word .docx file. When opened in LibreOffice the font is black but any attempt to change the font to any one of a number of common fonts results in the ugly color that cannot be changed.

I was prepared to love LibreOffice but this is not tolerable.

Dear Cal Messing! It seems to me that you accidentally turn on the change tracking mode (or it was included for the document that you are opening). Please look here

What happens when you edit the document? Add text, delete text? If you see added text in a different colour and deleted text with strike-through, you have accidentally enabled Record changes in the Edit menu.
