Upgrading from 3.x to 4 - MSOffice File Associations lost

If I upgrade a Windows XP PC from 3.x to 4 using the “Typical” installation settings, where my previous install of 3.x had Microsoft Office files associated with LibreOffice, this association is lost.

Attempting to modify the installation shows that association boxes are ticked - but the end result is associations are still not set up.

I’ve found that if I uninstall LibreOffice altogether then reinstall as a typical install, the files are correctly associated. Further, when I uninstall an installation that was put on as an upgrade, the text in the dialog box is mostly boxes:

Is this intentional?

Just to be clear, are you saying that the default association of LO with MSO files is missing (i.e., Open) or the alternative association of LO with MSO files is missing (i.e., Open With…)?

In the case I’m talking about, MSO is not installed at all, therefore IMV LO should automagically set itself up as the default association. This is precisely what it does if you uninstall/reinstall.

If you install over the top of an existing earlier installation, not only does it not set itself up as the default association, it removes all existing associations for Excel spreadsheets and Word documents (haven’t checked anything else) so the OS has no idea how to open them.

I also run XP Prof / SP3 and can say that the little squares are a XP problem. I recently observed it in the Power Manager window.

In the frame of some other work I did the following and the little square problem was solved the same time.

1 - Uninstalled all dotNETFrame verisons and installed new starting from v2.0.

2 - Thereafter I run 2 - 3 time the windows update procedure until all was updated.

Thereafter the little squares displayed as correct letters.

I installed LiO 4 as portable version and saw normal text on the installation windows.

@Unije - Could you please post or indicate the solution of your problem under this question?
