How do I create different headers for each page?

Hello. I am very new to Libre Office and need a bit of help with creating chapter headers. I would like the title of the book on one page and then the chapter title on the next alternating. I can’t seem to figure out how to insert the appropriate page style. Thank you.

If you’re very new to LO, read at least the built-in help about page styles.

As a beginner, define one page style per chapter. In the Header tab, check Header on and uncheck Same content on left and right pages so that headers may differ.

Use Heading 1 paragraph style for the title of your chapters.

Put the cursor successively on the Headong 1 paragraphs (which start your chapters) and Format>Paragraph. Go to the Text Flow tab. Check Insert (Breaks) and With page style to select the page style devoted to your chapter.

Once this is done, click in the header area (it is easier to locate it if you View>Formatting Marks) and type your headings (book and chapter titles).

This is called “direct formatting” and will cause problems with style updates because it overrides style attributes. But, you’ll quickly get your desired layout.

Once you have got enough confidence in your skills viz. LO, it is highly recommended to switch to automatic insertion in the headers, based on fields, so that you can make do with a single page style for all chapters and no direct formatting. You’ll Insert>Cross-reference.

The book title can be set through File>Properties, Description tab and retrieved as DocInformation, type Title.

The current chapter title is retrieved as Cross-references, type Headings and “Insert reference to” Reference.

Many variants are possible.
