I was told that a doc file that I have on a web site contains a virus. LO opens it just fine, and various virus checkers have given my entire site a clean bill of health. If there was a virus in the doc file would LO detect it? how about odt files and others.

LO does not check for viruses. That is a function of your OS/other software in your OS.
