why does my spreadsheet start blinking and slowing to respond until I "save" then it works a little and starts blinking again.

Spreadsheet starts blinking and all key strokes become slow to respond.
I “save” the doc, it works properly for a short while then resumes blinking and slowing down.
Any cures? Thank you.
