Replace text with field

I have several documents that would greatly benefit from some simple automation. Specifically I want to use doc information fields to be able to quickly reuse generic documents with different participants etc. Fields are easier and safer to edit than blindly edit/replacing text strings.

The documents are already written and they aren’t short, so it’s no help to use any form of autotext to enter the fields, therefore I just want to do a controlled one by one replacement with edit replace.

In Word, although there is no way to specify fields in the edit/replace dialogue one can insert the desired field into the document, then copy this from the document and then paste this into the replace field, this then allows the standard edit replace function to change text to fields within the document.

Having tried this in Libre Office it doesn’t work, the result is that the text of the field in the document is pasted into the replace field in the dialogue. However I can see no other options that allow me to specify a field as the replacement.

Is it possible to do this at all in Libre Office, if so how?

Thanks.

Try this:
Insert the Field in the text.
Select and Copy the Field from the text.
With Find&Replace search for the word(s) to substitute.
Click on Find All.
The words to substitute are selected.
Paste now, word(s) should be replaced with the Field…

Apologies - been away for 4 months!!

That is a VERY counter-intuitive solution but it works! More importantly as I would need to skip through the finds and selectively replace, using find next in the dialogue and keyboard paste works as well.

Thank you for that. I don’t get the logic, but as a workaround it’ll do me. - Would be nice to have this done in the dialogue so it’s all consistent.

We can’t have all
