How do I make a soft return?

Are you referring to a line break? Shift+Enter; note that this does not start a new paragraph, styles from the existing paragraph will continue to apply after the break until the next paragraph break.
Use Ctrl+F10 - or View | Non printing Characters to see the breaks - Pilcrow or end of paragraph ¶ Line break ↵
