I had this identical issue with Open Office so switched to LibreOffice.
I press F7, if I ignore the spelling mistake all is well. But if I ask for a correction it will loop with a spinning beach ball and the Activity Monitor shows 99% CPU for LibreOffice. And Cmd-Opt-Esc does NOT bring up the force quit prompt. I have nEVER seen that happen. Force Quit from Activity Monitor does nothing as well so it is a very tight loop.
Any ideas?

Since it happens in two different 3rd party products I suspect it is a Mac settings flaw or similar. Apple is unhelpful so far.
