Writer forgets about previous Endnote citations - bibliography errors

I am using Endnote X8.2 and Libre Portable 6.1.2.1 with Windows 10 and saving in the docx format.
If I write a paper using Endnote to add citations, everything works fine (i.e., I can add citations in the format I desire and build a bibliography). However, once I have selected “Format Bibliography” and then saved my paper and closed it down, the next time I open the paper, Writer has forgotten about the previous Endnote citations and bibliography. If I add some more citations, it will create the footnotes correctly, but it will add a second bibliography below the first bibliography. It will not combine all of the sources together into one bibliography. Then, if I erase both bibliographies and attempt to make a new bibliography by selecting “Format Bibliography” from the Endnote toolbar within Writer, then no bibliography is created at all. It seems that Writer has forgotten about all of the previous Endnote citations. As this is a pretty severe issue and no one has reported it yet, I am concerned that it is a result of using Libre Portable, rather than installing it on my hard drive. Can anyone offer me any assistance? Thank you!

p.s., a secondary question is:
In Microsoft Word, we can use and set many different keyboard shortcuts for Endnote (e.g., Alt+2 = insert selected citation(s); Alt+7 = find citation(s)). Is there any way to set up these shortcuts for use in Libre Writer?

Which OS? Document saved in which format (.doc(x) or .odt)? Please provide info through an edit to your question, not an answer.

PS: you shouldn’t have posted as wiki

I revised my original post (Windows 10, and using the docx format). I did not realize that I posted in the wrong place. I’m very sorry about that. Would you please tell me where I should have posted and I will change to that site? Sorry!

You’re on the right site. It’s only a matter of “mode” for the question: wiki is reserved for abstract general interest (and is considered deprecated because there are nearly no such questions) and non-wiki is for personal issues. Wiki prevents you accumulating karma points which are necessary for accessing “advanced” feature, such as attaching a file, voting, accepting own answer, easy editing.

Is this where I should have posted my question? https://ask.libreoffice.org/c/english/5

You are on this site

LO Writer can read and save in .doc(x) format for compatibility purpose. However, specification for M$ Office is not publicly available and content of such files is rather a guess than a perfect implementation. Expect differences and “glitches” with advanced features like tables or bibliography. Also, LO Writer and M$ Word are based on different, sometimes contradictory, base principles. Translation between the concepts is not always perfect.

Does the issue persist if you save in .odt format?

As a rule, working files should always be saved in application native format to minimise problems. The file should only be converted at the end of editing process, just before transmitting to other people using a different application.

You can also reverse the constraint if you are the main author: M$ Word is supposed to understand .odt format (though it took liberties in implementation). Forward the file in .odt leaving the burden of compatibility to others. (I know, that’s cheating.)

EDIT Keyboard shortcuts

Many many keyboard shortcuts can be set through Tools>Customize, Keyboard tab. The function is selected in the bottom kist and key selected in top box. Press Help for details. Note that some “function” names are rather obfuscated (in my opinion).

EDIT 2018-12-7 Endnotes shortcuts

I don’t know what the exact semantics is for Insert selected citation of find citation (find anchor in text or go to “citation” in note section?), so this is only a guess. Vocabulary-wise, I assume “citation” is a synonym for “note” (it could also encompass bibliography entry which is handled differently).

I found candidate commands in the keyboard tab (first keyword is taken from the Category list, second from Function)

  • Edit, Footnote or Endnote
  • Insert, Endnote/Footnote
  • Navigate, Edit Footnote/Endnote: already linked to Shift+Ctrl+Page Down
  • Navigate, To Footnote Anchor
  • Navigate, To Next/Previous Footnote

I suppose the Navigate commands applies equally to endnotes even they are labelled “Footnote”.

Since I don’t know what you’re looking for in detail, experiment and eventually give some feedback on command equivalence between M$W and LOW.

Yes, working in .odt fixes the problem! Thanks so much for your solution. Also, everything you wrote about file formats etc… makes good sense. Should have thought of that before I despaired and posted this question. Thanks so much for the help.

Do you know if it would be possible to add the keyboard shortcuts that Word uses for Endnote into Libre Writer?

I looked at the tools->customise->keyboard tab, but none of the Endnote functions are listed in the bottom kist. Is there any way to add Endnote’s various functions to this list?

Try looking at https://www.zotero.org/ for the extension that might help you.
